Coachella Festival 2010 Gets Independent
Philadelphians should stay independent but that doesn’t mean that they should stay in Philly (all of the time).
This past week Independent Philly traveled to California to attend the annual Coachella Festival in Indio, CA. (www.coachella.com)
For those of you not in the know, Coachella is a three day concert festival that boasts around 130 bands, five stages, and over 30 hours of live music.
While it is impossible to see every band, here is the list of the bands that I personally saw rock the crowd (which I’ll try to put into order):
Day 1: Perry Farrell vs. Steve Porter, Yeasayer, She & Him, Passion Pit, Them Crooked Vultures, LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, & Jay Z (who brought out his wife Beyonce to surprise the crowd…video below).
Top three from Day 1: Yeasayer, Passion Pit, & Jay Z.
Day 2: Camera Obscura, The Temper Trap (briefly), Craze & Klever, Gossip, The XX, Coheed & Cambria (for two songs), Hot Chip, Faith No More (7th grade me would be very happy), MGMT, Muse, Z-Trip, The Dead Weather, Devo, & 2 Many DJ’s.
Top three from Day 2: The XX, Hot Chip, & Z-Trip.
Day 3: De La Soul, Glitch Mob, Matt & Kim, Florence & The Machine, Julian Casablancas, Phoenix, Orbital (video below as well), Plastikman, Gorillaz.
Top three from Day 3: Florence & The Machine, Orbital, & Plastikman.
The days were hot, and the nights were cool. There was something magical about the sunset sets on the outdoor stage as the sky turned shades of pink and purple and the breeze blew over the mountains and through the palm trees (the sunset sets were Passion Pit, Hot Chip, and Phoenix).
Around 100,000 people were there which made for big crowds, some long lines (including a seven hour long cab ride which forced me to walk the 3+ miles to our hotel on both Friday & Saturday night at 2 AM by myself), and plenty of people to befriend. About the only thing I didn’t see in my three days there was a fight (a physical one anyway) which was surprisingly refreshing.
This is one festival that every music lover should experience at least once while they are still young (or young at heart).
Finally, as promised, here are links to videos of Jay Z & Orbital that I shot at Coachella:

Looks like you had a great time.
Jealous.
